Why white LED is the right call
Grow-light marketing leans on two misleading numbers. Lumens rate how bright a light looks to us, which is tuned to green-yellow light our eyes favor, not the fuller range plants photosynthesize with. "Equivalent watts" is a made-up comparison to old incandescent bulbs. Neither tells you how much usable light a plant receives. The number that does is PPFD, the density of plant-usable photons hitting a surface, and the honest input you can always see is the actual wattage the fixture draws from the wall.
For a home, full-spectrum white LED wins on every practical axis. It grows low-light plants well, runs cool and cheap, lasts for years, and looks like normal light in your living room. The pink-purple "blurple" fixtures can be marginally more efficient because they emit only the red and blue diodes plants use most, but they make a space look like a laboratory and distort the color of everything nearby. Save those for a closed grow tent. In a room you actually live in, warm-to-neutral white is the answer.
What actually matters when choosing
- Actual wattage. This is your honest proxy for output. A low-light plant is comfortable under 20 to 40 real watts within a couple of feet. Read the true draw, not the equivalent claim.
- Spectrum. Full spectrum, or a daylight white of 5000 to 6500 Kelvin, covers what a foliage plant needs. You do not need a specialty bloom spectrum for leafy houseplants.
- Coverage and form factor. One plant needs a bulb or clip light. A shelf needs a bar or panel that throws light across the whole footprint, or the plants at the edges get starved.
- A built-in or plug-in timer. Consistency is half the battle. A cheap outlet timer turns a good light into a reliable one and stops you leaving it on all night.

Setting it up so plants respond
- Start at about 18 inches. Then read the plant. Stems stretching and leaning toward the light mean move it closer; bleached or crisping leaves mean pull it back.
- Run 10 to 14 hours on a timer. Twelve is a safe default. Keep it on during the day so the room still feels normal, and never run it around the clock.
- Center the light over the plant. Light drops off toward the edges of a panel, so the plant should sit under the brightest part, not off to one side.
- Give a whole shelf even coverage. With a group, favor a bar or panel over a single spotlight so the outer plants are not left in shade.
- Adjust with the seasons. Short, dark winters are exactly when supplemental light earns its place, so lengthen the run time when natural daylight fades.
Too little light shows up as the same symptoms people misread as a watering problem: stems that stretch and lean, new leaves that come in small and pale, and a general droop. For a low-light houseplant, buy a full-spectrum white LED, size it by actual wattage rather than lumens or equivalent-watt claims, and put it on a timer 12 to 24 inches from the plant for about twelve hours a day. A daylight bulb in a lamp handles one plant; a bar or panel handles a shelf. Skip the blurple fixtures unless you have a dedicated grow space. The right light is the one that keeps the plant compact and colored-up instead of stretched and fading, and a modest white LED does that in almost any dim corner.
