How often to water an orchid

Orchids are not grown in ordinary soil but in chunky bark or moss that holds air around the roots. They want a thorough soak followed by a near-complete dry-out, which usually means watering roughly weekly for a Phalaenopsis in bark, though moss stays wet longer and needs less frequent watering.

In spring and summer the plant grows actively and the medium dries faster, so weekly watering is typical. In autumn and winter growth slows and the medium dries more slowly, stretching the gap to every 10 to 14 days. Let root color and medium dryness, not the calendar, decide.

How to tell when it needs water

  • Root color. Plump green roots are hydrated; silvery-grey roots mean it is time to water.
  • Pot weight. Lift the pot; a watered orchid feels heavier, a dry one noticeably light.
  • Medium dryness. Poke a finger or skewer into the bark or moss and water when it is nearly dry.
  • Leaf cues. Firm, upright leaves are healthy, while limp, leathery, or wrinkled leaves can signal under-watering or damaged roots.

How to water it correctly

  1. Soak thoroughly. Run room-temperature water through the medium for a minute, or soak the pot in water, until the roots turn green.
  2. Let it drain fully. Let every drop run out so air returns around the roots; orchid roots rot if they stay wet.
  3. Empty the saucer or outer pot. Never leave the plant standing in collected water, which is the leading cause of root rot.
  4. Use room-temperature water in the morning. Watering early lets the crown and leaves dry by night, and tepid water avoids shocking the roots.

Signs of over- and under-watering

Overwatering shows as brown, soft, mushy roots, yellowing limp leaves, and a soggy medium, often from sitting in water. Underwatering shows as shriveled silvery roots and wrinkled, leathery leaves. Because root rot is the main killer, always err toward letting the medium dry out before watering again.
