How much light a Monstera needs

A Monstera does best in bright indirect light for most of the day. In the wild it climbs trees in dappled forest light, so it is adapted to strong but filtered brightness rather than full exposure. Place it a few feet inside a south or west window, or directly beside an east window where the morning sun is gentle. Aim for somewhere in the range of 200 to 800 foot-candles; if you can comfortably read a book by the natural light there, it is usually bright enough. The more light it receives short of direct scorching sun, the larger the leaves grow and the more pronounced the fenestration becomes.

Signs it's getting too little light

In dim conditions a Monstera tells you quickly. New leaves come out small and stay solid with no splits or holes, since fenestration depends on adequate light. Stems grow leggy, with long bare gaps between leaves as the plant stretches toward the nearest window. Growth slows to a crawl, the plant may lean noticeably toward the light, and the soil stays wet far longer because the plant uses little water. Variegated Monsteras in particular lose vigor and may revert in very low light.

Signs it's getting too much light

Too much direct sun shows up as damage to the leaf surface. Look for pale, bleached patches and brown, crispy scorch marks, usually on the leaves facing the window most directly. The foliage can take on a washed-out, yellowish cast rather than deep green. In intense light the soil dries out very fast and the plant may wilt between waterings even when it is not underwatered. Move it back from the glass or filter the light if you see these signs.

Best placement and tips

  1. Place it a few feet back from a south or west window, or directly beside an east window for gentle morning sun.
  2. Use a sheer curtain to soften any harsh direct rays from a strong south or west exposure.
  3. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week or two so all sides get even light and the plant grows symmetrically.
  4. Keep the leaves dust-free and the window glass clean, since both cut the light that actually reaches the plant.
  5. Add a full-spectrum LED grow light for 10 to 12 hours a day if your space is dim, set 12 to 18 inches above the foliage.
