How we researched this

We read 16 Reddit threads across r/houseplants, r/propagation, r/IndoorGarden, and r/plantclinic, tallied every grow light recommendation and complaint, then verified specs and prices on manufacturer and retailer pages. We did not lab-test lights; this page reports what plant propagators actually run, with links to the discussions.

Barrina T5 strips, the propagation-station standard

The default answer in propagation threads (amazon.com/dp/B0BLRRZ17Y). Cheap per foot, daisy-chainable, and the packs include mounting clips, zip ties, and sticky pads, so they go under a shelf in minutes. Owners run entire plant rooms on them. Buy the 3000K warm-white version if the purple-tinged look of some SKUs bothers you. Their weakness, output that fades past about 12 inches, is irrelevant when the light hangs 8 inches over a prop box.

Sansi 24W, the bulb for any lamp

Called the general favorite in the biggest grow-light threads. It screws into any standard E26 socket, so a $10 clamp lamp or the floor lamp you already own becomes a propagation light. High CRI (about 95) means plants look normal, not alien. Two caveats from owners: the 4000K white reads a bit clinical in cozy rooms, and the built-in timer maxes at 12 hours, so propagators add a mechanical outlet timer for 16-hour days.

Soltech Aspect, the one you put in the living room

The design pick: a $200 pendant lamp with warm 3000K light and CRI 98 that looks like decor, not equipment. The only complaint in every thread is the price. Nobody disputes it works.

GE Grow BR30, the drugstore-brand runner-up

$12 to $17 at big-box stores, plain white light, and years-long positive reports. At 9W per bulb it is gentle, so it wants to sit 6 to 9 inches from the cuttings; think single prop jar under a desk lamp, not a whole shelf.

The two-line buying guide

Rooting cuttings on a shelf or rack: Barrina strips under each shelf. Rooting a few jars near a lamp: one Sansi bulb and a $10 timer set to 16 hours. Either way, skip no-name lights; the known brands are already the cheap option.
