How often to water a Snake Plant

Snake Plants thrive on neglect and resent frequent watering. They store moisture in their thick upright leaves, so the soil should dry out entirely before the next drink. Depending on light and warmth, that lands anywhere from every 2 weeks in a bright, warm spot to every 6 weeks in cooler, dimmer conditions.

In spring and summer the plant grows slowly and may need water every 2 to 4 weeks. In winter it goes dormant and the soil stays wet for a long time, so the gap can stretch to 6 weeks or more. Always confirm the soil is bone dry before watering, no matter the season.

How to tell when it needs water

  • Finger or stick test. Check that the soil is dry all the way to the bottom, not just the surface, before watering.
  • Pot weight. Lift the pot; a thoroughly dry Snake Plant feels very light.
  • Moisture meter. Push a meter to the base of the pot and water only when it reads completely dry.
  • Leaf cues. Firm, upright leaves mean it is fine; slight wrinkling or curling signals thirst, while soft, mushy leaves mean too much water.

How to water it correctly

  1. Soak thoroughly. When the soil is fully dry, water until it runs from the drainage holes so the whole root ball is moistened.
  2. Let it drain fully. Allow every drop of excess to escape, since this plant must never sit in wet soil.
  3. Empty the saucer. Tip out any collected water immediately so the rhizomes never stand in moisture.
  4. Use a gritty, fast-draining mix. Cactus or succulent soil helps prevent the rot this plant is so prone to.

Signs of over- and under-watering

Overwatering shows as soft, mushy, yellowing leaves at the base, foul-smelling soil, and leaves that flop over. Underwatering shows as wrinkled, curling, or slightly browning leaf tips, though it is far less dangerous. Because rot is the real threat, always lean toward watering less rather than more.
