Most likely cause

The most common cause of browning Pothos leaves is inconsistent watering, and the texture of the brown tells you which way you went wrong. Pothos are forgiving but dislike extremes, and both a bone-dry pot and a constantly soggy one show up as brown, failing leaves.

Confirm it by feeling the soil and touching the brown area. Dry soil with crispy, papery brown edges and tips means the plant ran short on water. Wet soil with soft, dark brown patches and yellowing means the roots are rotting from too much water. Match your fix to the pattern: water more consistently for crispy edges, or let the soil dry and check the roots for soft spots.

Other causes

These rank below watering issues but often contribute.

  • Overwatering and root rot. Soggy soil suffocates the roots; brown spots are soft and dark, leaves yellow, and the stem base may feel mushy.
  • Too much direct sun. Harsh light scorches the foliage; dry, bleached brown patches appear on the leaves facing the window.
  • Low humidity. Very dry air crisps the leaf margins; tips and edges brown while the leaf center stays green.
  • Fertilizer or salt buildup. Over-feeding burns the roots; brown leaf tips appear alongside a white crust on the soil surface or pot rim.

How to fix it

  1. Read the soil and the spot. Dry soil with crispy edges means thirst, wet soil with soft spots means rot. Let this guide everything else.
  2. Water consistently. When the top inch or two is dry, soak until water drains, then empty the saucer.
  3. Check the roots if soggy. Unpot, trim any soft brown roots, and repot in fresh, well-draining mix if rot is present.
  4. Move out of direct sun. Give the plant bright indirect light, back from hot, sunny glass.
  5. Raise humidity. If air is below 40 percent, use a pebble tray or humidifier.
  6. Flush the soil. Run water through the pot for a minute every couple of months to clear mineral salts, and feed only at half strength during growth.
  7. Trim the damage. Cut fully brown leaves at the base and trim brown edges along the dead margin with clean scissors.
