How much light a Pothos needs
A Pothos is happiest in bright indirect light, where it grows fast and keeps its leaves large, full, and well variegated. Place it near an east window for gentle morning light, or a few feet back from a brighter south or west window. It performs well across a wide range, roughly 100 to 500 foot-candles, which is part of why it suits offices and interior rooms so easily. The key trade-off is variegation: golden, marble, and neon Pothos all hold their color far better in bright indirect light, while the same plant in a dim corner gradually shifts toward solid green to capture more energy.
Signs it's getting too little light
The clearest low-light signal is fading variegation, where patterned leaves turn progressively greener as new growth comes in. Vines grow leggy, with long stretches of bare stem between widely spaced leaves, and new leaves emerge smaller than the older ones. Overall growth slows noticeably, and the soil stays damp far longer because the plant draws little water. In very dim spots the plant survives but looks sparse and stretched rather than full and trailing.
Signs it's getting too much light
Direct sun is the main risk for a Pothos. Watch for pale, washed-out leaves and bleached or yellowing patches, especially on the foliage closest to the glass. Strong, direct rays leave dry, brown, crispy spots where the surface has scorched. The overall green can look faded rather than rich. The soil also dries out unusually fast in intense light, so the plant may wilt between waterings. Pull it back from the window or diffuse the light if you see this.
Best placement and tips
- Set it near an east window, or a few feet back from a south or west window, for steady bright indirect light.
- Choose brighter spots for variegated types so the color stays strong instead of reverting to green.
- Soften any harsh direct afternoon sun with a sheer curtain to prevent bleaching and scorch.
- Rotate the pot every week or two and dust the leaves so all the vines get even, usable light.
- Use a full-spectrum LED grow light for 10 to 12 hours a day in dim rooms to keep growth compact and colorful.
| Light level | Suitable? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Low light | Tolerated | Survives, slow growth, variegation fades to green |
| Medium indirect | Good | Steady growth, decent color and fullness |
| Bright indirect | Ideal | Fast full growth, strongest variegation |
| Gentle morning sun | Fine | Well tolerated, supports vigorous growth |
| Harsh direct sun | Avoid | Bleached, washed-out leaves and crispy patches |
